Retired and looking for a hobby I settled on old valve radios. Now all I have to do is figure out how they work.
Field Coil Rewind for Don's Columbus model 90 Radio.
Don from Don's Old Radio Shed RUclips channel reached out to me to help with with a open circuit speaker field coil from a New Zealand made Columbus model 90 radio. I was happy to help and offered to rewind it for him. I have returned the coil to him and he will fit it and test it. This video shows how I rewound it. Pop over to Don's channel to see if the rewind was successful. A link to Don's channel is below.

While visiting Sydney recently, my friend rang me and said he had an old Astor radio he had worked on but couldn't get it to work properly. I picked it up and brought it back to Queensland. This has been heavily worked on by a number of people, that rings alarm bells! That alone makes it the worst kind...

I just found your channel and really enjoyed this video. Very nice job. Subscribed !
Thank you and welcome Don 🙂
Hello, I'm working on building a dim bulb tester partially inspired by yours, however, the phenolic board for screw terminals on the Variac I ordered was cracked in shipping. Any advice on repairing it?
Only replace the board or glue. Maybe strengthen the repair with another piece glued to the back 🤔
Always a pleasure to learn watching you, thank you for your time. England
My pleasure Maurice. Thank you for your continued support 😃
Top job as always Dave 👏
Thanks Max 🙂
G'day Dave, sorry about our fruity language, but none of us need this kind of cb crap. Would much rather lay in the sun (which did arrive here in the UK eventually). Have some beer, and a good barbie. Thanks for being our bonzer mate. You all take care now. Love, and full support as always, sport! 😄 ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️🤝🤝🤝🤝🤝🤜🤛❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ From pommie bastards to downunder 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
No problem guys, beer and a barbie... sounds good 🥩🍻
Boy Dave, do you get around! I was checking out an old 50's tv series on YT, and one of the right side of the screen video choices had a '46 Packard radio restoration. I've never really checked out car radio repairs before, but after checking out the history of the Packard brothers and the "Quality" of their work, I thought I'd check this one out. You already know where I'm going with this... Another David Tipton fan. Another person who's humble enough to learn from your efforts. I thought that was too cool. But then to see the comments and finds you had left one hour ago ( ! ? ) I shared with my wife, and said "what are the chances?" Just wanted to let you know. Also, like him, I'm looking forward to your AA5 restoration! Take care Dave! -Chris
Hi Chris, I was blown away by that Packard car radio Vern restored. It fitted seamlessly behind the dash. Any early car radios I had anything to do with had bowden cables and a big unit above the passengers feet. As usual he did a great job restoring it. I was surprised when Vern started rolling over the vibrator lip in the vice... Haha... he gave me credit as he did it which was marvellous to see. I am in contact with a number of fellow RUclips radio restorers and we are able to help each other out and I think I can see a shift in RUclips channels as we learn from each other. My next adventure is a radio sent to me by Buzz1151 in the US, it's not an AA5, it's an AC/battery set. Thanks Chris 👍🙂
@@DavidTipton101 That will be great! BTW..I spent Friday's day off work with 2 high school rock band mates at the "Back to the 50's" car show at the Minnesota state fairgrounds. It's possibly the largest old car show on earth. (Great Fun!) Anyway, I had a chance to share with Mick, our drummer about you, your channel, and how much I've learned over the last few years watching. His dad was a radio, stereo and tv repairman. He had tons of tubes, parts and knowledge. Mick said his dad shocked him one time when Mick was trying to fix an old radio. His dad came in, watched and then told him to flip the set over and told him the exact part to replace. He did, and he was blown away by his Dad's knowledge. Mick inherited all his dad's neat "stuff"! I never fail to pass on info like your channel when I'm sharing. I'm hoping Mick checks out your channel. Take Care David! -Chris
Thanks for spreading the word Chris 🙂
David, love your videos.
Thanks OIE 🙂
G'day Dave, another fine video, with your usual humour, much appreciated our end and hope you're all staying safe👍👍👍👍👍 Never get involved with cb radio, the blokes on there are the biggest bunch of ............ that there has ever been. Cb was meant as a form of "friendly communication". Friendly communication my a..e. My other half got told to f..k off. "You're no mate of mine, not talking to you so f..k off!" He has taken his cb rig down, plus aerial and put it into the loft, crawl space. Not on, not bloody on at all. He's NEVER offended anyone over cb either. They can all go 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽🖕🏽 Sorry Dave Love and FULL support as always. Nina, Wayne, Barbara & Noddy ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😄😄😄😄😄😄👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 BONZER MATE!
Thanks Nina, Wayne, Barbara & Noddy. I never got into CB, just as well I think 🙂
Hi david, i have 1960 philips radio and the radio was inherited from my grandfather but i dont know how to use or run it can you help me
Find the model number of your Philips radio and Google it, there will be some info on it somewhere 👍🙂
After watching your videos I can see that Australia developed a very strong electronic industry at some time (I used to think that Australia was just an importer of technology from UK or U.S, sorry for the misconception). I do love the Australian fantastic sets that you have restored in such a dexterous and impeccable manner. I have become an avid watcher of your videos. Greetings from Chile.
Hello Angel, thank you. We did have a thriving electronics industry up until the mid 70s when the government lifted protection tariffs on imports. It all fell apart in a very short time 🙄
Surprised o/p tx screwed dirctly to power tx. Any. Hum would be mechanical passed to o/p tx. Just guessing at early view.
It is an odd place to mount it, I assume it is mounted 90 degrees from the transformer winding direction. I haven't watched the video for a long time 🤔
I have noticed your vids are quite old never the less they are valid and always will be. I often think why didn't transistors progress from simple triode valve equivalent to multi grid equivalent. However it would seem that if one might need a pentode type device then you just add further transistors with appropriate circuitry to make a pentode type device. This thinking probably led to the development of IC's and so the need to develope solid state multi grid type no longer exists. Beautiful bench layout in your room. T Y.
David, I have the very same radio have started to recap it, has a strange fault sounds like an old wartime siren in the background, I think I have a dodgy valve luckily I've got quite a few spare ,you have great site keep going
Hello Phil. I had feedback too until I changed the capacitors and it went away. I did swap some valves over so it may have been one of those. Thanks Phil 👍🙂
I thought you said STD and I'm not talking about interstate phone calls either! xxx Why are all the brilliant guys straight? I need a husband too you know????
Haha... thanks Andrew 😄

What a pro you are doing this job for a friend like Don. Just two amazing guys on a great collab.
Thanks Steve, Don's a good bloke, I don't mind helping out 🙂
Very nice rewind video David, I LOVE your rewinder tool! That is so nice!
Thanks Gregg. You should get one, it looks impressive even if you don't use it 👍😄
3XY. Where the wrinklies fly. Now I know I'm 63. I love valve driven gear. I own a Primaluna HP integrated amp. 6 12AU7s pre. 8 EL34s post. It sounds delicious.
Hi Andrew, I think you will find it was 3AK where no wrinklies fly. I can't remember what 3XY's catch phrase was. Wow... that is a lot of valves 😱 You won't need a heater with that running 😄
@@DavidTipton101 It was a while back...like 1975. No FM, no Dance music but boy we had it good. This current generation are pathetic. I was a gay club DJ for many years and now we have nothing except bailed morons. The quality of your work is the best I've seen...period. I also did night school to study audio visual engineering. I should have gone to tech school after year 12 but mum wanted me to be a "something". I am very much like you. If a friend wants me to look at their gear, after the first look I say "I've gotta rewire the whole lot". I do it properly and they can't believe it's the same system. I was very popular in Bali in the 80s. They're sound gear was abysmil and no earth or RCDs....SCARY. One shop I went into in Bali to buy cassettes, had pretty good equipment but sounded bad. I said to the owner that I could fix it. After about an hour I needed RCA leads. His mate came back with the leads and after a bloody good clean, I fired it up and it was chalk and cheese. They offered me money etc but I said "hows about you buy me some spaghetti and a can of Southern Comfort". All of his friends started rocking up to listen to his gear and were stunned. It ended up a party and after i said watch the volume, they gave me a lift back to my resort. They get excited easily but along Kuta Beach road now, the western cancer has taken over. McDonalds KFC Burger King etc. At 63 a 7 hour flight is all I can cope with now. Cheers Andrew Collins Mebourne.
Hope that the Enamelled Copper wire doesn't break.
It didn't 🙂
Nice one Dave! It worked well enough. I remember we emailed a bit at the time you had my Loewe Opta Meteor power transformer to rewind and you went the whole hog in buying this winding equipment. I hope you get some more interesting jobs to complete with the winder. Thanks for sharing! Cheers! Peter😊
Hello Peter, thank you. The winder has been worth the money, even if only for convenience sake 👍🙂
Great Video Dave, short and sweet. Great video.
Thanks Stephen 🙂
Such a cool machine David. You make it look easy. Thanks for sharing. 73 de KB7ICI.....Bill.
Thank you Bill 😊
Dave, the coil master .....
Thanks Chris 😄
You are the official coil whisperer. I watched Don's 1st episode of that radio and figured he would be sending that field coil to you. It's great to see fellow radio restorers helping each other out. Another great video as usual.
Thanks Ian. Don's a great bloke, I have no hesitation helping him as he has for me in the past 🙂
Hello dave I have been looking into setting up a coil winding machine have been finding more and more of a need for one !
Very handy Richard, a second hand one would be perfect, if you can find one. I couldn't 😕
14,000 turns, 1,400 ohms, so multiply or divide to get one or the other, so would that work as a rough guestimate for most field coils?
Thanks Dan, yeah, it might give a ball park. If the wire is right it would be close 🙂
David I like your approach to making some thing work again thanks for the video
Thanks Sheldon 🙂
Where did the machine come from? Aliexpress?
Yes, I think it was 🙂
Nice work David!
Thank you William 🙂
Hello David. Quite enjoyed your video on re winding the speaker coil. Hope it worked. Take care Derrick.
Thanks Derrick, it did! 🙂
hi David....that field coil re-wind was a perfect job for the World Famous Buzz Winder! 🍺🍺
Hi Buzz... I know... but L'll have to settle with my winder, I hope to upgrade to a Buzz Winder™ one day but things are tight at the moment, it will have to wait 😢🍻
Nice work, very clean. Most people don't understand if a radio uses a field winding, you can't replace with pm speaker unless you put a choke where the field winding was.
Yes, a choke or a resistor will do it. Thanks Fred 👍🙂
Very impressive! Thanks for the video.
Thank you ladamurni 😊
Great, now I finally know what Don's shed actually looks like.
Haha... it looks much better now he has fixed it up a bit 😄
Great job Dave!! Is there anything that you can not fix.😉
Thank you Jan. I am hopeless at knitting 😊
Nice work David sir thank you so much for the sharing this video sir 👍 😊❤❤
Thank you Nath 🙂
Just finished both videos and it was so pleasing to see this collaboration on YT within our radio community, it was great team work for sure. 2 thumbs up for both of you. Seeing the re-winding go so smoothly was immensely satisfying so was the moment Don got sound from his bench speaker. I'm happy for both of you and never had any doubts you could pull this off Dave. Thank's for sharing. I'm off to re-string a Marantz receiver now and i'll try to shoot some footage to help others sometimes struggling with this part. Have a great day mate.
Hello Raymond, thank you. There is quite a bit of collaboration between creators and the subscribers, it's very pleasing to be a part of it. Good luck with your restring 👍🙂
Your winding rig seems to work really well. Very smooth!
It does, thanks Shannon 🙂
Another quality repair Dave.. Nice Work!! Hopefully will see you Sunday!!!
Thanks Chris, I should be there 👍🙂

I believe you have done these by hand before. Hey, Mate.
I started out doing them by hand but this is much easier and neater. Thanks clasicradiolover 🙂
Insightful and valuable information as always DT. Just hope Don appreciates it 🤪
Thanks Danny. Don was very happy to get this coil back and working 👍😊
Another wonderful adventure !!
Thank you Craig 🙂
Another enjoyable video Dave. *****
Thanks Mick 😊
Getting your coil winder set up to keep the wire smooth and flat reminds me of getting my Webster-Chicago wire recorder properly adjusted to wind the wire smoothly onto the takeup spool and have it lie flat without tangling. And then after having listened to whatever had been recorded on the wire, I have to wind the wire back onto the supply spool without breaking or tangling it...always a bit nerve-wracking. Here you don't have to worry about transferring it back and forth between spools. Nice repair!
Thanks Joseph. I don't have a wire recorder but my friend does and he explained the difficulty involved to keep it all aligned. They work amazingly well though, I was surprised 🙂
Nice job!
Thank you Michael 🙂
After you get more experience you will realize the number of turns and DC resistance is ridiculously inconsequential. You can simply use wire close to the same size and fill the form with wire. It will work fine without all the hassle. The number of turns and resistance will be easily close enough to what the original was to work fine.
Hello glasslinger. Yes, thank you, I am being too anal with this and you are right. I will still measure and calculate things out because that's in my nature but I won't worry as much with the result. Thanks for your help 🙂
Brilliant. Thank you so much for sharing your skill and expertise.
Thank you Patrick 😊
Hi Dave , you know what will happen now? Jobs from all over the world hahaha. Many thanks from UK.
I know 😄 Thanks Chris.
